Turmeric is a pungent Asian spice with a fascinating heritage. The fleshy root of the turmeric plant (Curcuma longa) is dried and ground to produce a finely powdered spice with a lustrous golden colour. As well as being an essential ingredient in Indian curries, turmeric also plays an important role in traditional Ayurvedic philosophy.
Turmeric is a spice that requires careful blending. The flavour is uniquely earthy, with a slight tang. There’s also a hint of peppery heat. While not particularly distinctive on its own, turmeric works behind the scenes to transform its sister-spices into a symphony of deliciousness.
One of the most notable compounds found in turmeric is curcumin. As well as giving turmeric its saffron colouring, curcumin is extracted from turmeric root and sold as a popular dietary supplement. Curcumin is even more effective when combined with black pepper. To boost the bioavailability of the curcumin in our Taka Turmeric products, many of our recipes feature a pinch of black pepper.

Hibiscus flowers have been treasured in Egypt for thousands of years, where they're traditionally brewed into a vibrant ruby-red drink enjoyed both hot and cold. The flowers we use come from organic farms in the Nile Valley, where the warm climate and rich soil create the perfect conditions for growing deeply flavoured hibiscus.
The best hibiscus has a beautiful crimson colour and a distinctive tart, cranberry-like flavour with subtle floral notes. This natural tanginess pairs wonderfully with warming spices like cinnamon and the earthy richness of turmeric, creating a balanced, refreshing cup.
Hibiscus is naturally caffeine-free and packed with vitamin C, making it a lovely choice any time of day. Try our Hibiscus Cinnamon blend to experience top-quality, organic hibiscus paired with aromatic cinnamon and golden turmeric.

In our Taka Turmeric tea recipes, we use 100% organic Ceylon cinnamon. This sustainably grown spice is made from rolled quills of Cinnamomum verum bark. Cultivated mainly in Indonesia, this true form of cinnamon is famous for its delectable aroma and flavour.
Cinnamon is a deliciously fragrant, woody spice that’s often associated with festive treats like Christmas cakes and mulled wine. In India, cinnamon is an Ayurvedic spice that forms one of the main ingredients of Garam Masala.
Ceylon cinnamon adds subtle warmth and complexity to many of our spiced tea recipes.

Liquorice root has been used in traditional Indian medicine for centuries, valued for its naturally sweet flavour and soothing qualities. The roots we use are organically grown in India's fertile regions, where they're carefully harvested and dried to preserve their rich, warming character.
The best liquorice root has a deep, earthy sweetness that's around 50 times sweeter than sugar, with a subtle aniseed note. This natural sweetness means our teas need no added sugar, and it beautifully balances the warm spice of cinnamon and the golden earthiness of turmeric.

Coconut palms thrive along India's tropical coastlines, where they've been a cornerstone of daily life and cooking for generations. The desiccated coconut we use comes from organically grown coconuts, grated and gently dried to preserve their natural sweetness and creamy character.
The best desiccated coconut has a subtle, milky sweetness and a delicate texture that adds a lovely depth to herbal blends. It brings a gentle creaminess to the cup, softening the earthy notes of turmeric and creating a naturally smooth, rounded flavour.
Coconut is naturally caffeine-free and contains natural oils that help your body absorb turmeric's beneficial compounds more effectively. Its mild, comforting flavour makes it a beautiful pairing with warming spices, adding a touch of tropical sweetness to every sip.

Star Anise - India
Star anise has been prized in Indian cooking and traditional medicine for centuries, valued for its distinctive warming flavour and beautiful star-shaped form. The star anise we use is organically grown in India's southern regions, where it's carefully harvested and dried to preserve its aromatic essential oils.
The best star anise has a rich, sweet liquorice-like flavour with warm, slightly spicy notes. Just a small amount brings depth and complexity to herbal blends, adding a gentle sweetness that beautifully complements the golden earthiness of turmeric and the warmth of other spices.

There are various types of pepper which can be used to add warming flavours to foodstuffs and drinks. In our Taka tea recipes, we use the crushed, dried corns of Piper nigrum.
The hot, spicy flavour of black pepper comes from a natural compound called piperine. As well as making our spiced teas deliciously moreish and stimulating, piperine also has a special digestive synergy with turmeric.
Along with turmeric, our signature ingredient, you’ll often find a warming pinch of black pepper in many of our Taka spiced tea recipes.
